La première fois que j'ai entendu le thérémine, j'avais six ans. Mon père avait ramené à la maison l'album de Clara Rockmore, « The Art of the Theremin », paru en 1977, qui venait d'être réédité pour la première fois sur CD. Rockmore et son instrument semblaient habiter à la fois le passé et le futur. J'ai appris que l'instrument était associé à l'extraterrestre, en raison de sa surutilisation dans les films de science-fiction du milieu du siècle dernier. Pourtant, la voix électronique de Rockmore était loin d'être surnaturelle. Elle était profondément humaine et empreinte d'une grande mélancolie. J'ai compris, à l'époque, que l'inventeur de l'instrument avait disparu, son unique interprète virtuose s'était fondue dans l'obscurité et le thérémine s'était complètement éteint. Heureusement, ce n'était pas tout à fait vrai. Bien que l'instrument demeure aujourd'hui une espèce en voie de disparition, une poignée de théréministes professionnels sont dispersés dans le monde entier.

The first time I heard the theremin, I was six years old. My father had brought home Clara Rockmore’s 1977 album “The Art of the Theremin” which had just been reissued for the first time on CD. Rockmore and her instrument seemed to inhabit both past and future. The instrument, I learned, had become associated with the extraterrestrial, owing to its overuse in mid-century sci-fi films. Yet Rockmore’s electronic voice was far from supernatural. There was profound humanity to it and a deep sense of melancholy. As I then understood it, the instrument’s inventor had disappeared, it’s only virtuoso faded into obscurity, and the theremin had effectively gone extinct. Thankfully, this was not being entirely true but the theremin is a severely endangered species. Today, only a handful of professional thereminists are scattered across the globe and few professional-level instruments are available on the market. Amateur interest remains steady with low-cost instruments and kits readily available for purchase.
